The Official Chart | The UK Top Ten (9th June)

This week on The Official Film Chart, The Hitman’s Bodyguard shoots back in, and our Basic Instinct returns but nothing can stop Godzilla VS Kong from returning to the top!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

SUMMER SEASON IS OPEN!

Finally! The summer blockbuster season of 2020 was a complete washout, thanks to COVID. Almost all of the big releases were pushed back to this year instead. While cinemas are still not operating at 100% capacity, it is great that they are now open for business again. And the summer blockbuster season of 2021 is here in great style. We have seen films such as ‘A Quiet Place Part II’, Spiral: From The Book Of Saw’, and ‘Godzilla VS Kong’ open on the big screen. And this week has seen ‘Fast And Furious 9: The Fast Saga’ finally open, over a year later than planned. With the tickets now on sale for Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’, we are getting top-quality entertainment which will become available on home entertainment later this year.

UPCOMING ENTERTAINMENT!

Have you watched the brand new and final trailer for ‘The Suicide Squad’ yet? The film is due to hit our cinema screens at the end of July. It is another title that will boost the cinemas and guarantee bums on seats. And will be another huge title later in the year on home entertainment. The same goes for ‘Snake Eyes’. The film is a prequel for the ‘G. I Joe’ film franchise and again will be a big film cinema and home entertainment-wise. It too has a new trailer out this week. And with the announcement of the newTransformers: Rise Of The Beasts film coming next summer and the IMAX footage for ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ playing before ‘F9’, the future looks bright.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

As for the chart this week, there are not that many surprises again. With the digital price cuts on all streaming platforms, it was inevitable that some classic films would rear their heads again. This week, to make way for them, we bid a sad goodbye to ‘Indiana Jones-The Complete Adventures’, ‘Chaos Walking’, and ‘2 Hearts’. But what is the top title this week? Is it titans or superheroes that lead the way for everything else? Or could there be a surprise waiting in the wings that have defeated all-comers? Forget the football, let’s go take a look!

Official Film Chart

THE TITANS RETURN TO THE SUMMIT!

Just as I predicted last week, thanks to their emergence on the disc formats. Our new number one is ‘Godzilla vS Kong’ once more. The battle between the two legendary titans has managed to take the chart by storm again. The film now celebrates its second non-consecutive week at the top. The monster smackdown has outsold the rest of the chart combined with 89% of its sales coming on disc. The film is an entertaining film that all the family can enjoy. Kids can cheer for their favorite creature while adults can relax in the knowledge that the film is harmless fun. It does have its faults but doesn’t distract from it. It is the perfect Saturday night family entertainment.

THE LEAGUE FALLS…AGAIN!

With the titans reclaiming their spot at the top, it means the DC superheroes fall once more. But yet again, it is only by a single place. Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’ now fights against Darkseid and Steppenwolf from the second position. The best film I have seen this year so far, the epic comic book movie continues its winning run. Ever since it was released back in March, it has been downloaded and bought in its thousands. I have the film in all the formats, just to complete my collection. I’m waiting for the IMAX cinema release to hit screens later this year as I will be first in line to see it as it should be seen.

WONDER WOMAN IS WONDERFUL AGAIN!

DC manages to score two out of the top three placings this week. Rising by three places to take the bronze position is ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. The all-action DC sequel, once again starring Gal Gadot has been bouncing up and down the charts for a while. It is a former number one and has done remarkably well on PVOD and home entertainment. Although slightly inferior to the original film, it is still an enjoyable romp with the Amazonian princess. And as for that surprise mid-credits cameo…

TOM AND JERRY FIGHT TO HOLD STILL!

Holding their fourth place this week, still battling it out after seventy years is Tom & Jerry: The Movie‘. The cartoon duo is still bringing fun and enjoyment to families across the country. Their particular brand of comic mayhem continues to strike a chord and the funny bones of the audience. With Spike the dog also making an appearance, the film will entertain the young ones for hours.

A QUIET PLACE GROWS QUIETER!

Losing two places this week is the original ‘A Quiet Place.’ While its sequel is setting the box offices around the world alight, the original is holding its own. Thanks to a digital price cut and the desire for audiences to catch up on the story, the film is still selling well. That is despite its fall this week to the fifth position.

COMING SOON!

Do you feel like watching some entertainment that isn’t for families or children? Did you miss seeing this on the big screen or PVOD? Well, look no further. Hitting, almost literally, download and keep from Monday, June 28th is the rebooted version of ‘Mortal Kombat’. The action-fantasy videogame adaptation is a much more violent affair than the versions from the 1990s. This new version contains blood, gore, and plenty of nasty sequences that will make fans of the franchise extremely happy. Don’t be fooled by the 15 rating, it is particularly nasty in places. But that is half the fun. The film will get a sequel, thanks to a decent box office return. So another franchise has been rebooted and has become a success. I liked the film and I think many people will too. So, grab it from Monday! FIGHT!

STONE’S BASIC INSTINCT RETURNS!

We return to the weekly chart now with this week’s only new entry. And it is a welcome to the top ten charts for the very first time to ‘Basic Instinct’. The controversial erotic thriller has hit the chart thanks to a 4K collectors edition release in the sixth position. The film is now twenty-nine years old but continues to spark debates to this day. Even actress Sharon Stone continues to discuss THAT scene! Despite what people remember about the sex scenes, the film is a good thriller.

Michael Douglas plays the lead role, a Police officer with a murky past. He is brought in to investigate the brutal murder of a rock star during a bout of kinky sex. Sharon Stone plays the chief suspect, a best-selling novelist who embarks on a steamy affair with Douglas’ detective. The film does contain some nasty scenes of violence and the final twist is still a good one to this day. It can’t be classed as a classic film but the box offices around the world didn’t care, making it a box office smash. And Michael Douglas is always watchable.

AMMONITE ARRIVES!

Rising by nineteen places to hit the top ten in seventh place is the drama ‘Ammonite’. Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan star in this period romantic drama set in the 1840s. When the acclaimed fossil hunter Mary Anning (Winslet) is entrusted with the recovery of the wealthy Charlotte Murchison (Ronan) the two form an undeniable, intense bond that changes both of their lives. The film is a moving drama and one that stays in the mind long after the end credits.

RAYA ON HER WAY-A OUT!

Dropping three places to land in the week’s eighth place is the Disney animated film ‘Raya And The Last Dragon’. The film has made itself into a great success since it debuted on PVOD but is now slowly sliding down the charts.

JACKSON & REYNOLDS BLAST BACK!

The sequel is in the local multiplex right now. And, as such, the original film ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ rises by seven places to become this week’s ninth best-selling title. The film, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds is a quite brilliant and often hilarious action film. I have yet to see the sequel but I can confirm that I found the original film to be a complete blast. And the scene on board a bus full of nuns still makes me cry with laughter to this day.

TENET IS STILL THE WORD!

And finally, the Christopher Nolan masterpiece of cinema ‘Tenet’ manages to hold onto its place in the tenth and final position. The film does require several viewings to understand it as best as you can but it is worthwhile viewing.

TENET 008

FINISHING OFF!

And that’s all there is for the week. My thanks for touring through the movers and shakers once more. And as always…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
