Sony Pictures Delays Its Big Guns

Delayed! The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes see some of Sony’s big guns pushed back to 2024. New release dates announced for some new in-production movies.

Sony Pictures has blinked first in the wake of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood. Rumours have been flying about regarding some of the biggest upcoming movies from the big studios that are due for release this year. It is starting to happen. Sony has postponed release dates for several of their content, ranging from a few weeks to as much as ten months. However, one film has been delayed indefinitely. Let’s examine which titles have been affected.

GRAN TURISMO

The upcoming movie, based on a true story, has been pushed back by two weeks, from August 11th to August 25th. The movie will have sneak previews on the original weekend date of release as well as on the weekend of August 18th. A Sony spokesman said of the slight delay: “The stars can’t promote the film, but the audience can.” It is hoped that by spreading good word of mouth, the film will be a late summer blockbuster for the studio.

KRAVEN THE HUNTER

The Sony/ Marvel studios comic book movie Kraven The Hunter should have been hitting screens on October 6th. The release of the Aaron Taylor-Johnson movie has been postponed and is now set to hit theatres on August 30th, 2024. It is unclear whether the delay is due to post-production not being finished or other factors related to industry strikes. The new release date is approximately ten months later than originally anticipated.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE SEQUEL

If you were looking to bust some ghosts again this Christmas, you’re out of luck. The sequel to the successful reboot of the franchise has spirited away from its December 20th opening to instead manifest itself in a March 29th, 2024 slot. The film has finished shooting. But with the actors still needed for post-production work, the film can’t be completed while the strike continues.

SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE

After this year’s blockbuster Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Read our review here), fans were looking forward to seeing Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse on March 29th, 2024. Here is some bad news for you. The film has been delayed indefinitely. There is no new release date for the film, so we can forget the sequel webbing its way into screens in 2024. However, even without the strikes, the film would have been hard-pressed to make its March 2024 release date. With that in mind, it’s actually better that the film has been pushed back to an unconfirmed release slot. That way, the film won’t be rushed and should give the filmmakers time to make it the best it could possibly be.

THE KARATE KID REBOOT

Not much is yet known about the reboot of The Karate Kid apart from rumours of Jackie Chan returning. However, the film has been delayed from June 7th, 2024 to December 13th, 2024.

NEW RELEASE DATES

After all the news about the delays, it isn’t all bad news for movie fans. Some of Sony’s 2024 releases have finally been given dates we can expect to see them in cinemas. With Kraven The Hunter being delayed, Sony’s next entry into their own live-action ‘Spider-Verse’ will be Madame Web. The film stars Dakota Johnson as the title character, Cassandra Webb / Madame Web, with support from Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter / Spider-Woman. The film will open two days earlier than scheduled on February 14th, 2024.

VENOM 3

The third film in the Venom franchise has been slotted in for release on July 12th, 2024. Tom Hardy once again plays Eddie Brock/ Venom. Hardy has also contributed to the story of the film alongside screenwriter and director Kelly Marcel. Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor have been cast in undisclosed roles. There is no word on whether Michelle Williams will appear again as Anne Weying or Stephen Graham as Patrick Mulligan/ Toxin.
