Captain Marvel Soars At The Box Office

Brie Larson sets the box office ablaze to record a stellar opening weekend

Take that, trolls!

You tried to spoil the party yet again but thankfully, this time you failed.

In a shock to completely nobody around the world, The Marvel/Disney adaptation of the comic book of the same name, ‘Captain Marvel’ has decimated the worldwide Box Office. Opening in various countries simultaneously this past weekend, the film opened in the United Staes to the tune of $153 Million. The Brie Larson fronted superhero film scored the second highest opening for a solo superhero film across the DC/Marvel universe behind last years ‘Black Panther’.

Alongside the $302 million the film made in international territories, the film earned a massive $455 Million opening weekend, making the film gain the rank of seventh place in openings for the Marvel Universe film franchise and the second biggest opening without Robert Downey Jr making an appearance in a Marvel Film.

Critics around the globe have given the film the thumbs up with a 79% average on Rotten Tomatoes. This is in contrast to last week before the film opened when internet trolls attempted to do to the film as they did to 2017’s ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ and give the film a lower score despite the film having not having opened yet. Thankfully, the audience voted with their feet instead of believing the lies and saw the film in their droves.

Audiences around the world have praised the film for its strong female lead and the humour contained throughout the film. Top of many audiences enjoyment came from an unusually comedic performance from Samuel L. Jackson as a younger Nick Fury and the feline character of Goose the cat. Adding to the fans appreciation was the opening Marvel Logo, usually showcasing the heroes of the Marvel Universe having been changed to honour the late, great Stan Lee with a montage of his cameo appearances in the Marvel franchise alongside a simple ‘Thank you Stan’ message after the logo faded. Stan Lee managed to film his normal cameo before his sad death and rumours abound that he managed to film one for the upcoming ‘Avengers: Endgame’ due for release next month. One can only hope that Marvel uses his cameo montage again to open the next film.

Having seen the film myself, I can report that the film is excellent entertainment. Brie Larson fills the role of Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel with ease and gives us a strong female superhero to cheer for. As the film is a precursor to the upcoming Avengers phase 3 closer, we can look forward to seeing her in action again in just over a months time. This gives us ample time to see Captain Marvel‘s opening adventure before flying with her again next month when she makes her debut alongside The Avengers on the big screen. Samuel L. Jackson is fantastic as Nick Fury, digitally De-aged back to his younger days as just an acting S.H.I.E.L.D agent but with a great sense of comedic style. And Clark Gregg makes his long-awaited Marvel cinema return as Phil Coulson, again de-aged for the film but fitting in seamlessly.

Captain Marvel is now playing at a theatre near you and I recommend you taking a trip to your nearest screen to see it.
