Captain Marvel Should Not Have a Love Interest in 'Captain Marvel 2'

Higher. Further. Faster. AGAIN! Captain Marvel 2 Officially Underway

Disney and Marvel Studios have announced that production has officially started on the sequel to last year’s ‘Captain Marvel‘. The Brie Larson starring origin film introduced us for the first time on the big screen to Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel to tremendous box office success. The film took an amazing $1.1billion at the worldwide box office, kick-starting last years summer box office season. Of course, the character did make her second appearance of the summer in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ but strangely, the epic Marvel conclusion for the original ‘Avengers’ was shot BEFORE the Captain Marvel movie was filmed.

There’s no word yet on who will be directing this second standalone film for the character but we know it won’t be the first film’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The pair are being lined up to create an as yet un-named Disney+ project. Wandavision writer Megan McDonnell is on script duties this time around. We do know that the sequel won’t be set in the 1990s like the original film but set in the present day. While this isn’t a problem for Larson, it may represent a change of actress for the role of Maria Rambeau, Danvers’ best friend who was played in the first film by Lashana Lynch. The reason behind this being that while Danvers will show no sign of ageing, Maria Rambeau would be in her fifties due to the film being set in the present day. Of course, make-up or even CGI ageing could be used to keep Lynch in the role but will Disney/ Marvel want to go that far instead of simply recasting an older actress in the part? Lynch could theoretically play the part of Maria’s daughter, Monica as the character will be around the same age as Lynch is now but only time will tell.

It has also been revealed that the film won’t form part of the fourth phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe. The film is expected to open in 2022 whereas the fourth phase of Marvel movies starts this year with ‘Black Widow‘ and continues with ‘The Eternals‘ later in the year. Of course, Marvel release dates are open to being moved and only they know how they have planned the phases out so we will just have to wait and see.

There’s no word yet on any co-stars for the film. The previous entry had Samuel L Jackson, Jude Law, Clark Gregg and Ben Mendelsohn, who made a cameo appearance after the end credits of last years ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘ as his character from the original film. I can see Jackson, Law and Gregg making at least a guest appearance in the second film as well as Cobie Smulders but, again, we will have to wait for an official announcement on exactly who will be joining Brie Larson in the next adventure. But whoever joins the cast, its exciting news for all fans of the Marvel Universe that Captain Marvel will be returning once again.

Until next time.
