This week – the Force strikes back as two Star Wars movies return to the chart but not even the Jedi can stop the march of the Trolls World Tour!
“Clint? Where’s Nat?” That’s the question we would all like the answer to as it seems Nat AKA ‘Black Widow‘ is on the move again from her October UK release date. The film was due to hit screens back in March/April until COVID-19 decided to throw one hell of a big spanner into the works. We were all hoping that it would be safe to return to the cinema by now and they have tried their best to bring the audiences into their screens. But the lack of big-budget, top-quality entertainment has backfired. ‘Tenet‘ has tried to lead the way and has done so valiantly but it hasn’t been the savior that the industry hoped for.
‘Mulan‘ moving straight to PVOD hasn’t helped matters either and with the postponement of ‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ to Boxing Day in the UK (That’s at the moment) and the likelihood of the rest of the big releases to depart the schedules and claim releases next year instead, it looks bleak for the cinema industry.
When it comes to home entertainment this week, we see a single new entry alongside two re-entries into the chart. These three new additions mean three titles must depart and once more, we must say goodbye to ‘Dolittle‘, ‘Joker‘ and ‘Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn‘. The single new entry is an old film, now twenty-one years old that makes its first-ever appearance in the top ten. And we have a brand new number one once more. Is it a new entry? Is it a returnee to the top? What could it be? Put on your dancing shoes, tune-up the singing voice and let us take to the stage once more.
Yes, you’ve guessed it. I gave you the clues and I can confirm the news. After topping the chart for six weeks in succession before being deposed for the past fortnight, once more the official UK number one title is ‘Trolls: World Tour‘. Indeed, the film has returned to the top to claim its seventh week as the top-selling title. The animated sequel has had a whale of a time inside the UK top ten, renting, downloading, and selling in its thousands and now occupies many homes up and down the country. The film also benefitted from a price cut on all streaming platforms and this has helped boost it back up the chart by two places.
Our single new entry into this week enters in the second-placed position. Sixteen years after what was considered to be the last film that would be made and after the re-release of the trilogy in special edition forms, George Lucas launched ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace‘ into the world with record-breaking (at the time) success. The first chapter in a brand new ‘Star Wars‘ trilogy, the film played to packed cinemas across the world and helped bring the franchise to a new breed of fans. The film has been released in a SteelBook version and this has helped the film make its first-ever showing in the UK top ten charts. Now, considering that I own three DVD copies of the film, one Blu-ray and a Digital edition to go alongside the eight times I saw it at the cinema (Really!), this new SteelBook edition will soon be making its way into my collection alongside the rest of the SteelBooks I own of the saga. And there are more yet to come!
Making it a two-three placing in this week’s chart, it is fitting to see the final episode in the ‘Star Wars‘ saga ‘Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker‘ take the third-place position, one place behind the first episode. The film has risen three places up the chart again, once again boosted by a digital price cut on the streaming platforms and yes, I did indeed buy it! I’m a sucker for ‘Star Wars‘ and for some reason, every time the franchise releases a new version, in different packaging or on a different format or platform, I just have to buy it. George Lucas and Disney have made a fortune out of me!
Last week’s number one falls three places to become this week’s fourth best-selling title. But the fans out there are still paying tribute to their fallen hero, the late Chadwick Boseman as ‘Black Panther‘ holds onto a top-five place. I think its fitting that the film has managed to return to the top ten charts as well as the cinema in honor of the sad passing of one of the nicest guys there has been for a long time.
Losing a place in its private war and battle for chart supremacy, the Sam Mendes directed masterpiece that is ‘1917‘ parachutes down to number five, closing out the five biggest sellers of the week. The film recently went back up in price on the streaming platforms after enjoying a price cut and moving back up the charts. The film has enjoyed itself during its time in the top ten and still shows no signs of departing anytime soon.
We begin our tour of the nether regions of this week’s chart by getting all webbed up once more as our friendly neighborhood web-crawler makes his welcome return to the top ten in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. The second solo outing for Tom Holland’s version of the classic Marvel Comic book character has risen nine places to claim this week’s sixth placed-position. The film, alongside the other ‘Spider-Man‘ films that have been made in the past twenty years, has seen a significant price reduction on the streaming platforms in the past week, and fans and collectors have been snapping up the films at a bargain price.
Rising another three places after returning to the chart last week, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are locked, loaded, and firing again on all cylinders as ‘Bad Boys For Life‘ claims this week’s seventh place.
This week sees ‘Sonic The Hedgehog‘ suffer a severe case of cramp as his legs seem to run out of steam which in turn sees the film take a massive tumble, falling six places from last week’s second position to finish the chart race of the week down in the eighth spot.
Pressing the pause button this week and holding onto the ninth position, Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the gang cling on desperately in ‘Jumanji: The Next Level‘
And finally, returning to the top ten again by rising four places to claim the tenth and final spot, we welcome back Greta Gerwig’s wonderful adaptation of ‘Little Women‘. The film was unfairly overlooked during the Awards season despite starring the likes of Saoirse Ronan (who MUST win an Oscar soon, she’s nominated every year), Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen. Gerwig herself deserved to win the award for best director but strangely wasn’t even nominated. A travesty that needs to be rectified, Hollywood!
Hitting DVD and Blu-ray from Monday, September 21st, the long-delayed, long-gestating, and long-awaited fantasy adventure that is Terry Gilliams’ ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote‘ becomes available. Starring Adam Driver and Jonathan Price, the film has had a long and laborious road to finally make it into cinemas. Gilliam started work on the film way back in 1989 but until 1998, was unable to get the funding he needed. Shooting began in 2000 with Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis (who was Depp’s partner at the time) but due to many problems behind the scenes including financial difficulties, led to the film being canceled. Gilliam tried again between 2003 and 2016 and lined up the likes of Depp, Ewan McGregor, Jack O’Connell, Robert Duvall, John Hurt, and Michael Palin but every attempt ended up being canceled for various reasons. Johnny Depp finally lost interest in the project, John Hurt sadly passed away from cancer and it looked like the film would finally fade away into the ether. But in March 2017, it was announced that filming had begun with Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce in the lead roles, and the film completed filming in June of 2017, seventeen years after it had first commenced. But once again, legal problems hung over the film, forcing it to be released in only a few countries around the world. However, it did manage to get shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Critics were divided on the film with many saying it wasn’t worth the seventeen-year wait but was a credible effort nonetheless. You can find out for yourselves when the film hits shelves from Monday.
