Netflix to team with Ubisoft to explore Assassin’s Creed in an all-new series

Netflix has sent shockwaves reverberating around the entertainment industry by revealing plans to team up with Ubisoft to develop a live-action series based on Assassin’s Creed. The series has been described as “epic” and “genre-bending” and promises to tap into the dynamic stories and mythology the franchise is famous for.

Assassin's Creed: The Essential Guide - Introduction

The streamer is actively searching to appoint a showrunner while Ubisoft Film and Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik have been appointed as Executive Producers. A spokesperson for Ubisoft had this to say about the partnership:

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise. We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Netflix also shared their excitement for the deal which is also said to include collaboration in other media like animated series’ and anime. Netflix added: “We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for. From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchise of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

This is fantastic news. The Assassin’s Creed franchise comes packed with a glorious heritage that originated from the 2007 video game and features a league of assassins tasked with defending the realm from the Knights Templar.

This is a bold and exciting step forward for Netflix. A live-action movie version hit our screens in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson, and although it failed to reach the box office heights the studio would have wanted the movie did whet the appetite for more adventures.

There is no better home for an Assassin’s Creed series than Netflix. The streamer has demonstrated a knack for producing noteworthy content like The Witcher, and if the showrunners can tap into the rich heritage of the Creed mythology, fans can look forward to a very special streaming spectacle when the series finally hits our screens.
