Official Film Chart - A Quiet Place Part 2 Header

This week on the Official Film Chart, Nobody arrives, and we re-visit Dune but the top of the chart remains A Quiet Place!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD IS NOW AVAILABLE TO RENT ON PVOD!

Despite opening at the back end of July,  the DC sequel The Suicide Squad is now available to rent on PVOD. My favorite film of the year (so far) hasn’t been the big success it was thought to be. This is, quite possibly because of the simultaneous release on HBO MAX in the United States. That has dragged the film’s box office earnings down a fairway. However, the film is a rip-roaring all-action blockbuster. It is also extremely violent, foul-mouthed, and gory. It is also, at times, quite hilarious. The scene where Idris Elba’s Bloodsport argues with John Cena’s Peacemaker while they are killing what they think are villains in a jungle camp is quite brilliant.

(L-r) KING SHARK, JOHN CENA as Peacemaker, IDRIS ELBA as Bloodsport, DANIELA MELCHIOR as Ratcatcher 2, and DAVID DASTMALCHIAN as Polka-Dot Man in Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action adventure “THE SUICIDE SQUAD,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.
BLACK WIDOW IS AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM THIS COMING MONDAY!

Hitting the disc formats from this coming Monday is the Marvel Studios Black Widow‘. The swansong of Scarlett Johansson as the character after eleven years is one of the best films of 2021. It also introduces young Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova who will be taking the mantle of the character from here on. With great action sequences, great humor, and a fairly decent storyline, the film is a winner for all the family. There are a few nasty bits in it which may be unsuitable for the younger viewers but it is a great Saturday or Sunday evening film to watch together. The film should also be available to download and keep from your preferred digital retailer.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

This week sees the two new entries and a huge riser that makes their top ten debuts. To accommodate these three new arrivals, three have to sadly depart. And with a tear in our eye, we bid farewell to ‘Spiral: From The Book Of Saw’, ‘Spider-Man’, and ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’ Our attention now turns to what could be the number one title. Is the top of the tree still pretty silent? Or has something arrived to make a lot of noise at the top? It’s time to find out.

IT’S STILL VERY QUIET AT THE TOP!

For a third successive week, our chart-topper remains ‘A Quiet Place Part II.’ The horror sequel, despite its title, has made quite the racket ever since it was made available to buy instead of being on PVOD. Emily Blunt once again takes the center stage in the film, continuing to lead her family through a world devastated by the blind but deadly creatures. With great support from Cillian Murphy, the film is an extremely decent and effective chiller. No spoilers but there HAS to be ‘A Quiet Place Part III’ somewhere down the line. The ending of the film demands it. And so do I.

THE DEVIL MADE IT STAY AT NUMBER TWO!

Cementing its position in the second spot is ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.’ The film, the eighth installment of the franchise continues to scare the pants off of the home audience. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga once again play the true-life characters of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Over the years, the married couple investigated many paranormal and supernatural cases. One of which was actually here in the U.K, the famous Enfield Hauntings. Both have now passed away but the franchise continues. It still will after the film was a success at the box office, PVOD, and now on the home formats.

THE FATHER SHUFFLES UP THE CHART!

Rising by four places this week is the Oscar-winning drama ‘The Father‘. The film follows an aging man who must deal with his progressing dementia. It is quite a powerful film. And one that will amuse the viewer as well as disturb them. It is also one that needs some tissues by the climax. It brings into perspective what sufferers of dementia go through daily. Sometimes, you want to look away from what is on screen. But ultimately, it is a compelling watch. Anthony Hopkins gives probably his best-ever performance in the lead role, with great support from Olivia Coleman.

NOBODY HITS THE CHART!

No, that isn’t an error! Our first new entry this week is the action thriller ‘Nobody’. The film stars Bob Odenkirk, the stunning Connie Nielsen.  RZA, and the legendary  Christopher Lloyd. The film follows a bored family man who, after his house gets robbed, returns to his dangerous former life. This ultimately makes him the target of a vengeful drug lord. Now, those of you who know Odenkirk from ‘Better Call Saul’ will be shocked by what he gets up to here. But the film is one hell of a rollercoaster ride. And it comes as no surprise to find that the writer of the film, Derek Kolstad, also created the ‘John Wick.’ franchise. I highly recommend the film as it is a blast.

PETER RABBIT HOPS IT AGAIN!

Rounding out this week’s top five, we find ‘Peter Rabbit 2’ has hopped down a place. The live-action/ CGI family sequel has been a roaring success on all formats and has kept everyone entertained over the past few months. Now the school holidays are over, the young ones won’t be asking for it so much. However, it will still be selling well over the coming weeks and months.

COMING SOON!

Hitting download and keep from this coming Monday is the crime thriller ‘The Birthday Cake’ The film stars Ewan McGregor, Lorraine Bracco, and Val Kilmer amongst others. It tells the story of a young Italian-American, Giovanni, nicknamed “Gio”. He is reluctantly continuing his family tradition of bringing a cake to his Uncle Angelo’s house to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his father’s passing. It’s not long, however, before he witnesses a murder along the way. This will force him to learn the truth behind his father’s death and change his life forever. I have yet to see the film and haven’t heard much about it. But if it sounds like your kind of entertainment, grab it on digital from Monday.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST ARRIVES!

We return now to the chart by seeing what has taken sixth place this week. Thanks to a 4K UHD package, it’s a welcome to the chart for the 1984 David Lynch version of ‘Dune.’ The film has been re-released before the arrival of the new Denis Villeneuve version of the classic Frank Herbert novel. Now, Lynch, at times is an acquired taste film and directorial-wise. But even he, with his terrific vision and prowess, couldn’t save the film.

Dune 1984

His original cut ran for three hours and apparently, would have been a great film. However, Universal Pictures demanded a two-hour movie. Out went a lot of material and a voice-over track was added for various characters. There are some redeeming qualities in the film. But the cast, including a hopelessly miscast Sting, can’t salvage the mess that the studio and editor made of the material. And the voiceovers, mainly whispered, are incredibly annoying. There is an extended cut, which Lynch has disowned, which is slightly better. But if you fancy a blast from the past ahead of the new version, then grab it with both ‘Spice’ covered hands.

CRUELLA IS ON THE WANE!

Dropping two places this week to continue her evil and vindictive ways from the seventh place is ‘Cruella’. Emma Stone and Emma Thompson give great performances in this retcon of the property and character. The film is available on all home entertainment formats as well as Disney+.

A QUIET PLACE BOXSET WHISPERS INTO THE CHART!

The sequel is holding firm at the top of the chart. But the franchise isn’t content to only hold one spot in the top ten. Rising by twenty-three places to sneak into the eighth spot is the ‘A Quiet Place-2 Movie Collection’ boxset. The set enters the chart for the first time all thanks to the pair of films being released on the physical formats.

LUCA IS ON HIS WAY OUT!

The Disney film ‘Luca’ has suffered a six-place fall this week. The animated film, although charming and highly entertaining, is now on the verge of dropping out of the top ten.

GODZILLA AND KONG ARE ALMOST DOWN AND OUT!

And finally, those two Titans of the Monsterverse are almost down and out. ‘Godzilla VS Kong’, after battling each other for the past few months, have almost knocked each other out of the official film chart. The pair now continue their battles from the tenth and final position this week.
